CQC readiness: confidence beyond the inspection

Mention CQC and the reflex is much the same across the country: check the policies, tidy the shared drive and quietly trust that the practice manager knows where everything lives. Usually they do. That is not a resilience strategy, though. It is a single point of failure with a nice lanyard.

For a GP practice, readiness is not a folder. It is being able to explain how you deliver good care, notice when something is slipping and show what you did about it. It is confidence in what happens on an ordinary Tuesday, supported by evidence people can actually find without a three-day search.

Start with three honest questions. Do we know where our gaps are? Can staff, not just the manager, explain how things work? And can we show what changed when something needed improving?

Policies matter, of course. But so does whether people understand them, use them and know when to raise a concern. A beautifully organised folder has never, on its own, improved a single patient’s care.

This is where a quick, structured look helps. At Scale’s free CQC Practice Healthcheck is a short readiness quiz that helps you reflect on your strengths, spot potential gaps and see where evidence or governance might need attention. It takes a few minutes and gives you a clearer basis for deciding what to tackle first.

The real work comes next: turning that insight into manageable action, with clear priorities and responsibility shared across the team. Readiness is fragile when all the knowledge and reassurance sit in one person’s head, and people do occasionally take holidays.
