Once upon a time, a health provider could deliver good services, keep its head down and expect the contract to roll over. Those days have quietly left the building. Across primary care, community services, the voluntary sector and beyond, keeping what you already have, let alone growing, increasingly means bidding for it. Competing for funding is no longer an occasional event. It is business as usual.
Two things make this harder than it used to be. The first is speed. Opportunities that once came with comfortable lead times now land with alarmingly little notice, and the window to respond has shrunk. By the time a tender appears, the organisations that win it have usually been getting ready for months. Preparation is not something you start when the portal opens. It is something you should already have finished.
The second is the state of the other side of the table. Commissioning and procurement teams have been thinned out considerably. That changes how procurements are run: less pre-market engagement, leaner specifications, tighter timescales, fewer people to answer your clarification questions and little appetite for extensions. The polite, unhurried process some providers fondly remember is not coming back.
For organisations that bid regularly, this is merely uncomfortable. For those that do not, it can be genuinely alarming. Plenty of excellent providers have simply never been geared up for competitive bidding. They deliver brilliantly, then lose to a slicker submission from an organisation that is no better at the work but considerably better at describing it. That is a painful, and entirely avoidable, way to lose a contract.
This is where At Scale comes in. We have supported over 200 public sector organisations through bids and funding rounds, across a wide range of services, and we know the process from both sides, having helped commissioners write the specifications in the first place. We provide flexible, high-impact bid writing and management, extra capacity when your own team is already flat out, and honest advice on which opportunities are worth chasing and which are politely declined.
Crucially, we help you get ready before the bid lands, rather than during the scramble afterwards.
If your organisation is facing more competition and less certainty, start with our Bid Ready support, then email info@atscale.co.uk for a conversation about what is coming and whether you are ready for it.
